Quantity Surveyor

Our client is an industry leader in landscaping services, supplying all aspects of professional arboricultural and tree surgery requirements to a variety of commercial and public sector clients across the South East. A vacancy has arisen for a Quantity Surveyor to join their hardworking and dedicated team.

The ideal Quantity Surveyor will possess the ability to develop and build on relationships, helping to enhance the company portfolio. You will also be a confident communicator and have demonstrable experience and a proven track record in the Utility/Infrastructure sector in customer facing commercial roles.

As a Quantity Surveyor you will be a key contributor to commercial management of the business providing quantity surveying and general commercial expertise through project lifecycles. The role will be to ensure controls and good practices are established and applied to day to day business activities in pursuit of achieving the business and project objectives.

The ideal Quantity Surveyor will hold the following skills and experiences:

  • Demonstrable experience and a proven track record in the Utility/Infrastructure sector in customer facing commercial roles
  • Experience in building up estimates from first principles including commercial risk assessment, pricing risks and qualifying estimates
  • Evidence of aptitude in formal communications to customers
  • Familiar with valuing works and producing end life forecasts
  • Progress reporting on live works, understanding Earned Value
  • Understanding of contract law, such as offer and acceptance
  • Good knowledge of commercial risk management and evidence of producing project risk registers and linking risks, risk mitigations and quotation assumptions/qualifications for quotations
  • In depth understanding of contracts, in particular NEC3/NEC4 contracts
  • Excellent IT skills and in particular Excel and Word

Desirable Skills:

  • Exposure to business development activities
  • Experience in tendering for call-off or framework contracts
  • Able to compile robust but simple programmes as well as understand more complex programmes to calculate the impact of change
  • Experience and aptitude in creating and delivering presentations to customers

Your duties as a Quantity Surveyor will include:

  • Assisting in capturing and understanding market information and intelligence
  • Building detailed estimates (as required) using a ‘first principle’ bottom up approach in close collaboration with operational staff and technical experts to help determine and validate assumptions
  • Compiling supplier enquiry documentation and obtain supplier quotations
  • Producing and quantify risk and opportunities
  • Ensuring contract terms are properly appraised and contract terms negotiated
  • Being the commercial point of contact for assigned customers during contract negotiations
  • Attending contract and periodic performance meetings with customers and take ownership of the delivery of contract requirements from a commercial perspective
  • Tracking Progress of works in accordance with the contract, contract milestones and delivery programmes
  • Collating KPI information and provide reporting
  • Setup accounting and reporting processes to ensure costs are captured in a format that can be compared to the contract estimate
  • Measuring the progress of works completed on site and produce contract valuations
  • Comparing costs to the value of works completed and the original estimate
  • Providing and support the management of cost provisions
  • Ensuring that contract changes (scope, specifications, value, cost or time) are identified, notified and managed in accordance with the contract
  • Keeping senior managers/Directors informed of all changes, providing reports and updates on status and impacts of changes from both a price and time perspective
  • Sourcing and appoint supplier contracts
  • Managing supplier contracts, track progress, resolve disputes and handle supplier payment applications and invoices
  • Providing regular contract value, cost and profit forecasts including cashflow projections and debt reporting
  • Tracking risk and opportunity mitigation/execution plans
